Emotions/Emoções

Emotions (EN)

Eu não estou a intrepretar nada. Eu estou a sentir!” [I am not interpreting anything. I am feeling it!] I’ve heard that phrase during fieldwork, while writing notes for social science research. It was uttered in a firm manner, an answer laden with the infallibility of the senses, as raw feeling, as something you just know. In these words, there was no attempt to oppose the lived experience of the body against conceptual explanations or analyses. This sentence carries a claim that leads us to rethink ‘feeling’ as knowledge. Those who feel, know, and do not depend on any external rationality, beyond their corporeal sensations, to understand and describe the world. Those who feel, know, and in the expression of feeling, there are no uncertainties, parallel hypotheses, or contradictory arguments. Entrenched in the certainty of flesh and life, ‘feeling’ does not present itself as interpretation, but as a lived fact, beyond other explanations. The saying dismantles any separations between feeling and thinking, body and mind, idea and gesture. Everything comes from the sum of what we are, blending the past with present experiences, and future expectations.

What are emotions? What are they made of and how are they unmade or disentangled? What are they made for and what meanings do we give them? Emotions cannot be counted on the fingers of one hand. There are many, made of everything, and they all take part in how we experience the world, with our whole bodies, from head to toe. From the moment we come out of the womb, from the vagina and pre-natal matrix that shapes us, our first experience is to feel, from the hands that pull us to the breast that enters our mouths and feeds us, warm and soft. Before any word or thought, sensations are everything. We are and have, nothing more. Emotions take shape and substance alongside the experiences and knowledge that make us grow. They are shaped in our relation to people, places, and objects, with animals, flowers, and tall trees; with soil and sky, land and sea, light and darkness, at home or on a journey, in the streets, on the road, in the middle of nowhere, in peace or war, with abundance and wealth, or in poverty, having nothing and needing more. Emotions emerge from images, sounds, scents, tastes, and textures, marked by the weather and the passing of time, by the age we have, by the ailments that bend us, by the resistances that uplift us until death tears us to pieces, still whole in the emotions of those who remain, like parts of their hearts, maybe their souls.

Emotions are formed in connection with others: family, companions, friends, community, and society, with the spirits of ancestors, saints, angels, gods, demons, and other divinities, entangled in the multitude. They are crafted from religion, belief, cosmology, and ontology, shaped by how we think and create the world in each historical context, from culture to politics, from collective memory to an imagined future or the one you hope for. Emotions can be seen in the wrinkles of ours faces, in the gestures of a body, in the words we speak, in screams or smiles, in how we touch, in caring and affectionate embraces, or in the violence of fists and feet, harming others, hard and cold. Emotions are visible, hearable, and can be touched in the art we create; in literature, music, dance, sculpture, theatre, and painting, relived by those who seek it, by those who find them useful. From creative imagination to destructive urge, emotions are manipulated and used to create barriers, borders, fences, and walls of detention centres, among other concentration camps. Densified by theories, ideologies, and doctrines, by the most discriminatory and oppressive ‘isms,’ the emotions of some become a tool of censorship over the emotions of others, distancing and silencing bodies, identities, and desires, dividing everything and everyone in a closed circle of hate and fear. As long as the interests of a few, and their indifference to the suffering of many, remain the governing force in the world, we will continue to be broken, and all happiness indexes and reports will be false numbers, odd and wrong.

Returning to a woodcut print by the Brazilian artist Wilma Martins, O Regresso [The Return] (Lamoni, 2018; Martins, 1968), created during the dictatorship, everyone is made of the same matter, people of all colours and shapes, coming from the same source. Going back to this ‘opening,” to the common womb, implies the use of our larger emotions, affinities, affections, empathy, and love, from art to science, from religion to politics, from school to work, from the cradle to the grave. Emotions, products and makers of what we understand as embodied, cognitive, creative, performative, and social, are the realities that can inform and revolutionize our reason, accepting the ‘third half’ (Noronha, 2015) where no one and nothing is separable, where everything and everyone complete each other, a ‘sphere’ where all experiences and forms of knowledge fit, a perfect and open circle for all humans, beings, and things, made of our best parts, undivided, with strong ties and knots.
