Message of Repudiation of Professor Boaventura de Sousa Santos for the arrest of coercive conduct of the Rector of the Federal University of Minas Gerais

In my capacity as Director of the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra, I would like to express my most vivid repudiation for the unreasonable arrest of coercive conduct of the Rector and the Rector’s Team of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).

Concurrently, I wish to express my deepest solidarity with these honoured scholars and I bid you, on behalf of the international academic community, not to be intimidated by these arbitrary acts enforced by the anti-democratic forces that took power in Brazil.

They are well aware that none of this has to do with them personally as individuals since they know that there is no legal reason to justify such actions. The acts of which they are victims are aimed at demoralising public universities and make ground for their privatisation.

We are certain that these devices will not be fulfilled because the resistance of the academic community and the whole of the Brazilian democratic citizenship will impede such from happening.
The Rector of UFMG and his rectoral team are now at the forefront of this resistance and deserve not only our solidarity but also all our respect.

Coimbra, December 6, 2017
Boaventura de Sousa Santos
Director of the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra
