Nilma Lino Gomes holds a degree in education and a master's in education from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the University of São Paulo and a post-doctorate. She was General Coordinator of the Programme Programa de Ensino, Pesquisa e Extensão “Ações Afirmativas” at UFMG (2002-2013). She is a member of the National Association of Graduate Studies and Research in Education (ANPED), the Brazilian Anthropological Association (ABA) and the Brazilian Association of Black Researchers (ABPN). Gomes is a member of the Board of Basic Education of the National Council of Education. Pro-Tempore Dean at the Universidade da Integração Internacional da Lusofonia Afro-Brasileira UNILAB, having been the first black woman to lead a Brazilian university. Currently she is coordinating a research project under the theme “Black Movement, post-abyssal knowledge and thinking”. Author of multiple scholarly articles and several books, including Relações Étnico-Raciais, Educação e Produção do Conhecimento: 10 anos do GT 21 da Anped (2012, with Valentim, Silvani dos Santos e Pinho, Vilma Aparecida); Práticas Pedagógicas de Trabalho com Relações Étnico-Raciais na Escola na perspectiva da Lei 10.639/03 (2012); Experiencias étnico-culturais para a formação de professores (2011, with Silva, Petronilha Beatriz Gonçalves).
