Global Rap Opera

The Global Rap Opera Project is a musical spectacle that merges rap, as a representation of popular culture, and opera, a erudite culture. The script was written by Prof. Boaventura de Sousa Santos, a Portuguese sociologist and writer, and Renan Lélis, a professor and MC of São Paulo’s Rap collective Inquérito. The Global Rap Opera incites distant worlds and attempts to challenge in the artistic field. It seeks to contribute to the local actors’ processes of development while also broadening urban culture through Hip Hop elements.

The Project’s release will take place in Júlio de Castilhos Museum, in Porto Alegre. The program is as follows:

-Presentation of the research work conducted by composer Pedro Dom in the creation of the mini-orchestra formed by six musicians. The mini-orchestra will be part of the final show scheduled for 2014

-Reading of the Opera Prologue

-A lecture by Prof. Boaventura de Sousa Santos on the construction of the main character that inspired this project, Queni N.S.L. Oeste.

The event will take place online through live streaming. The Global Rap Opera Project is produced by the Instituto Trocando Ideia produced, an organization that has played a significant role in the construction and dissemination of Hip Hop culture in Brazil since the 1990’s, particularly in Porto Alegre.
