Conversation of the World III – Tarso Genro and Boaventura de Sousa Santos
After the public demonstrations held in Brazil during June 2013 and after the protests against austerity that were developed across several cities in Portugal during that year, a space for another “Conversation of the World” was generated, resulting in a dialogue between Tarso Genro and Boaventura de Sousa Santos. This dialogue was held on the 7th of July 2013 in Brazilian Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal.
Tarso Fernando Herz Genro (born March 6, 1947 in São Borja, Rio Grande do Sul) is a Brazilian politician, and a member of the Workers’ Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores – PT). He holds a bachelor degree in Law and his main interest is Labour Law. His activity as a political representative started back in 1968. For years he has served as a lawyer for workers unions and professional societies. He has authored several books in the topics of Law, Politics, and Literature. He has published his writings in France, Spain, Turkey, United States of America, Uruguay, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, and Italy. He was the Brazilian Ministry of Defense between 2007 and 2010. Currently he is the Governor of Rio Grande do Sul.
Boaventura de Sousa Santos was born in Coimbra. He studied law and sociology. He is Professor of Sociology at the University of Coimbra, Distinguished Legal Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Global Legal Scholar at the University of Warwick. He is Director of the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra. He has written and published widely on the issues of globalization, sociology of law and the state, epistemology, democracy, interculturality, social movements and the World Social Forum. He has done research in Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Macau, Mozambique, South Africa, Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador and India. He has received several international academic prizes and is a recognized activist of the World Social Forum.
