Señor Presidente,
Pasé todo el 30 de Septiembre de 2010 en la sede de la CONAIE (Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas de Ecuador) junto a varios amigos, entre ellos Alberto Acosta, Blanca Chancoso y Humberto Cholango. Estaba en curso un levantamiento policial y Usted estaba retenido. Fueron largas horas de incertidumbre y de mucho debate. Había quienes argumentaban que su política hostil en relación a la causa indígena no daba ningún incentivo al movimiento para salir en su defensa. Había quienes pensaban –como yo, mis dos amigos mencionados y muchas otras personas– que lo que estaba en juego era la sobrevivencia de la democracia y que, en ese momento, Usted era su garante. La discusión fue larga pero la decisión final fue muy clara: había que defender la democracia y hacer todo para que el Presidente regresase a Carondelet. Así se hizo y Usted regresó cansado pero recompensado de todos los riesgos vividos aquel día.
Salí satisfecho de la sede de la CONAIE. En aquella ocasión, como en tantas otras en el pasado, aquel edificio había sido el guardián de la democracia ecuatoriana. Para los que piensan, como yo, que las sociedades valen lo que valen las luchas colectivas de sus ciudadanos y ciudadanas por una sociedad más inclusiva y más democrática, las memorias de esas luchas son parte del patrimonio del país y no se borran nunca. Quienes imaginan lo contrario, acaban pagando un precio muy alto: son ellos los que son borrados de la memoria del pueblo.
Sin importar las justificaciones legales, expulsar a la CONAIE de su edificio es un acto injusto y políticamente insensato. Porque he sido solidario con Usted en tantas ocasiones, me pregunto en plural: ¿por qué desperdiciamos de manera tan desatinada una oportunidad única de transformar el Ecuador en una sociedad más justa, intercultural y plurinacional? ¿Cómo es posible dejar de ver que una oportunidad como esta no volverá en muchas décadas? ¿Cómo es posible que demos la espalda a una conquista de los pueblos como es el Sumak Kawsay? ¿Cómo podemos transformar tan fácilmente a adversarios con quienes deberíamos debatir en enemigos que se quiere abatir? ¿Cómo es posible que el
código genético racista de la izquierda latinoamericana nos atropelle cuando menos lo imaginamos?
Señor Presidente, sepa que, al expulsar a la CONAIE de su casa, expulsa a mucha más gente que inclusive no ha estado de acuerdo con ciertas opciones de la CONAIE en el pasado. Y sepa sobre todo que los sin techo son hoy en día un movimiento muy fuerte en nuestro continente. Los sin techo de la CONAIE darán qué hablar y seguirán haciendo historia.

Open letter to President Rafael Correa
Mr. President:
On 30 September 2010, I spent the whole day at the headquarters of CONAIE (Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador) together with several friends, including Alberto Acosta, Blanca Chancoso y Humberto Cholango. There had been a police uprising and you were detained. Those were long hours of uncertainty and much debate. Some of us argued that your hostile policies vis-à-vis the indigenous cause gave the movement no encouragement to come out in your support. Others were of the opinion that what was at stake was the survival of democracy and that you were its guarantor. I, myself, and the two friends mentioned above, as well as many others, were among the latter. The debate went on for a long time, but the decision was very clear: democracy had to be defended and all efforts made to bring the President back to the Palace of Carondelet. And so it happened. You were exhausted when you returned, but also rewarded for all the risks you had run that day.
I was happy when I left the headquarters of CONAIE. On that occasion, as on so many others in the past, that building had been the guardian of Ecuadorian democracy. For those, like myself, who think that the value of societies is the value of the collective struggles of their citizens for a more inclusive and more democratic society, the memories of such struggles are part of the country’s heritage and can never be erased. Those who think otherwise end up paying a heavy toll: they will be erased from the people’s memory.
Regardless of legal justifications, expelling CONAIE from its building is an unjust and politically silly gesture. Since I have been solidary with you on so many occasions, I dare to wonder in the plural: why are we foolishly squandering a unique opportunity to turn Ecuador into a more just, intercultural and plurinational society? Why can’t we see that such an opportunity will not repeat itself for many decades to come? How can we turn our backs to such a conquest of the peoples as the Sumak Kawsay? Why did we so easily manage to turn adversaries with whom we should be debating into enemies to be eliminated?
How is it possible that the racist genetic code of the Latin American left ensnares us when we least expected it? Mr. President, please, be aware that by expelling CONAIE from its home, you are also alienating many more people, even many of those who did not agree with some of the options of CONAIE in the past. Above all, do not forget that the homeless are today a very strong movement in our continent. The homeless of CONAIE will react and go on making history.
