Birkbeck Lectures 2012-2013 - Decolonizing Social Sciences

@ Mal B36, Malet Street, Birkbeck - February 15, 2013 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

The eighth in the series of lectures being given by Professor Boaventura de Sousa Santos as part of his Leverhulme Trust-funded Visiting Professorship: ‘Decolonizing Social Sciences’.

Professor de Sousa Santos is Professor of Sociology, University of Coimbra (Portugal), Distinguished Legal Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Global Legal Scholar at the University of Warwick. He is director of the Center for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra and has written and published widely on the issues of globalisation, sociology of law and the state, epistemology, social movements and the World Social Forum.

Boaventura de Sousa Santos has obtained world-wide recognition because of the impact of his work for the cause of global social justice. He has combined empirical research with innovative socio-legal theory, philosophy and critique, to shed new light on a vast array of issues, from the role of law and politics in the World Social Forum, to the challenge to neoliberal globalisation and liberal human rights raised by grassroots movements in India, the Americas and indigenous peoples around the world. More recently, Santos has been preoccupied with an ambitious project: to move from a critique of epistemology and epistemic sovereignty to an “epistemology of the south” that is responsive to the lived experience of the oppressed; those deemed non-human, invisible, non-existent or barely existent, the outraged or indignados and other monstrous peoples, those considered too backwards or the other-worldly part that has no part in this world, a world in which the future seems to have vanished from the horizon of coming generations and nature itself. This is the project that Professor de Sousa Santos will continue to develop during his visit at Birkbeck, aimed primarily at its research community but also the student body and the public at large.

Free event. All welcome. First come, first seated.
