Prof. Boaventura de Sousa Santos, University of Coimbra, Portugal, delivers a public lecture on Which kind of state can deliver which kind of development? on 17 February 2014 at 1600 hrs. Organized by IC4HD The lecture will be chaired by Prof. Chetan Singh, Director, Indian Institute of Advanced Study. Discussants include Prof. Shail Mayaram, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, and Prof. Gopal Guru, Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Abstract
It is high time for a thorough rethinking of the idea, or myth, of development, which entails a profound reform of the state under the aegis of three guiding ideas: to democratize, to decolonize, and to decommodify. Is the battle over common-sense neoliberalism a central part of our political life? How new is the new developmental state? The intrinsic contradiction among the three principles of modern regulation – the state, the market, and the community – can produce non-democratic solutions: corruption, neo-patrimonialism, authoritarianism. Or are there democratic solutions questioning the capacity of the state in an age of vulnerability (crises of finance, food, environment, energy)? Which kind of state could carry out the agendas that they call for?
